What is DTF Printing and How Does It Work?
Share
DTF printing, short for Direct-to-Film printing, is a revolutionary method that allows full-color designs to be printed on a special film and transferred onto a wide range of fabrics and products. At PressCraft, we specialize in precision DTF printing that offers unmatched versatility, durability, and visual vibrancy. Whether you’re customizing apparel or building a branded merchandise line, understanding how DTF works can unlock huge creative potential.
How Does DTF Printing Work?
DTF printing involves a 5-step process:
-
Design Creation: Your design is prepared digitally using graphic software like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.
-
Printing on Film: The image is printed in CMYK color onto a special PET film using a DTF printer. A white ink underbase is printed last to ensure vivid colors.
-
Adhesive Powder Application: The wet ink layer is coated with a hot melt adhesive powder, which sticks only to the printed areas.
-
Curing: The powdered film is cured under heat to prepare it for transfer.
-
Heat Transfer: Using a heat press, the design is transferred from the film to the fabric at around 300°F (150°C) for 10–15 seconds.
Once pressed and peeled, the result is a vibrant, flexible, and durable print that works on cotton, polyester, blends, canvas, and more.
